William McGuinn Guest Lectures Police Officers on Trial Testimony

Sea Girt, NJ

In late October, William McGuinn served as an adjunct professor during a 3 day training course at the Division of Criminal Justice Training Academy in Sea Girt, New Jersey. The course entitled, "Cops in Court: Trial Testimony for Drug Recognition Experts" was attended by police officers and state troopers from across the state. Bill lectured on issues relating to direct and cross examination in pre-trial suppression motions, pre-trial hearings and trials.

Officers who are Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) must complete a certification in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs) and Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE).  These officers must also demonstrate their ability to write descriptive and detailed DWI reports.

Lecturers in the Cops in Court program used their trial experience to further strengthen DRE certified officers through mock direct-examination and cross examination sessions.  The officers were also provided with cross-examination techniques used by defense attorneys and trained on how to deal with these techniques.

Bill has significant experience in the field of DWI (driving while intoxicated) law, having taken over 50 cases to trial.  In addition to defending clients accused of DWI throughout the state, Bill serves as the Municipal Prosecutor in Aberdeen Township.  In this role, Bill has prosecuted virtually every type of motor vehicle offense, including cases in which the defendant was charged with driving under the influence of illegal narcotics.  This unique and extensive experience allows him to lecture on this topic frequently, illustrating his extensive knowledge from the perspective of both a prosecutor and defense attorney.

Bill McGuinn has been recognized by the American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys (AIOCLA) for his exceptional performance as a New Jersey Criminal Law Attorney and was listed under the 10 Best Criminal Law Attorneys for Client Satisfaction in 2016.
